DENNIS WASN’T as sure of the way as he thought he was. We made a couple of wrong turns and had to backtrack. He became upset every time we had to do that. Sarah did too. I tried to keep a lid on my anxiety. It wasn’t easy, though. Every time Dennis left to be with his body, he reported that it was harder to get back. I didn’t like that. I still didn’t know how this worked, but if he was appearing to me because he was having an out-of-body experience and not because he was dead, then we were back to a big unknown about what would happen if his body actually died.

“It’s right up here, Eric.” Dennis popped back in one more time. He was barely there this time and was out of breath. Don’t ask me how a spirit would be out of breath. I figured it was a manifestation of how hard he was working to get there that time.

“Dennis, are you okay?”

He shook his head. “I don’t think so. I think it’s now or never.” He started to fade even more but looked me directly in the eyes. “If you don’t find me in time, thank you for trying. I really appreciate all you’ve done for me. Not everyone would have gone out of their way like this.”

“Don’t talk like that, Dennis. Of course we’ll find you in time.”

Sarah had been watching me with the facial expression I’d come to know meant she knew Dennis was there. But when I said that, she got even more upset than she already was.

“Why? What did he say?” She looked around. “Dennis?”

“He’s gone.” But when her eyes got wide I realized how that might sound. “I mean he’s not standing here anymore. We need to reach his body soon, though, before he’s gone in the other way too. He’s barely hanging on.”
